Fact: About 1000 years ago, (while the rest of the North American continent continued 'as is'), the Pettequamscutt river complex abruptly changed! People began living along the lakes and river.Pettequamscutt river feeds into the west side of Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island/Massachusetts. Entrance to the river complex is only available to boats at high tide (as is pointed out in the Sagas)!
Fact: Coincidently, this is the time Vikings had found and explored the 'New Lands to the west' of grapes, forests, wheat, butternuts and new people, and called it Vinland, bringing their cattle with them, trading milk with the natives.
Fact: Living with cattle over many generations gave Vikings a resistance immunity to tuberculosis mycobacterium (M.Bovis) which comes from cattle.

If we could trace backwards from the person who put the monster on the map to where he got the idea from and from that person and so on, back to the original person that began by saying 'Hey Guys! I saw a bone as big as my house over by where I pick berries!', one might ascertain the area that the 'bone' was and find it... or the rest of the creature.
