Each year, MBL courses attract a diverse population of over 500 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from more than 300 institutions and over 30 countries.
Students are empowered to pursue science at the very highest levels and work directly with outstanding faculty from around the world, day after day, pursuing novel experiments that test new ideas and foster a globe-spanning network of collaboration.

Woods Hole Undergraduate Internship Program Aimed at Diversity in Science. December 19, 2019. Woods Hole Partnership Education Program seeks applicants for 10-week summer program in 2020. The program recruits talent from all backgrounds but especially from minority groups that are underrepresented in marine and environmental sciences. Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1888, the MBL is a private, nonprofit institution and an affiliate of the University of Chicago. The MBL's oldest and most singular strength is our convening power, attracting the world's leading scientists and students to Woods Hole.
MBL courses welcome all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or country of origin. We are committed to developing a diverse scientific and academic workforce.
2021 Course Schedule
This schedule was developed in close consultation with course directors and reflects the MBL's goal of resuming as many academic and research activities as possible while adhering to public health guidance around social distancing and other measures designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
While all expectations are that the current pandemic situation will be improved by spring/summer 2021, it is important to remember that this is a fluid situation and that flexibility to adjust as needed based on external conditions and trends in the pandemic will be necessary.
Planning for quarantine dormitory space, COVID-19 testing and monitoring, and childcare, along with a host of other operational details, is currently underway. This page will be updated regularly as operational plans and guidance are developed.
